Step-Free Home Entrances: Design the Whole Route

A ramp at the front door does not create an accessible entrance if the parking space, path or threshold still blocks a wheelchair user.

🚪 The whole journey must work

• Start at arrival: Is there enough space to get out of a vehicle and reach the path safely?

• Choose a firm surface: Loose gravel and uneven paving can obstruct wheelchairs and create trip hazards.

• Control the gradient: The route should be level or gently graded, without awkward cross-falls.

• Finish with a flush threshold: A small lip can stop front castors and increase falls risk for ambulant users.
