Project Name: Fitting in beautifully.
Project Location: Derbyshire.
Project Description: To create an earth sheltered sound proof home office pod in the garden of a converted barn in an area of outstanding natural beauty and within the curtilage of a listed building.
Project Aims: The brief was to achieve planning for an innovative soundproof home office in heart of Derbyshire set in some of the most untouched landscapes in the Derbyshire countryside. In short create an invisible home office pod.
The Design:
Amount: The creation of an earth sheltered home office garden pod 19.36 sq m gross area.
Site Layout: The proposed earth sheltered home office garden pod has been designed not to overlook existing dwellings.
We have sited the earth sheltered home office garden pod in the north east corner of the site to avoid the existing trees (refer to plans) and minimise the earth sheltered home office garden pods’ impact on the surrounding landscape and neighbouring properties.
The design maximises the site views whilst considering the impact of the development on the neighbouring dwellings and context.
The natural contours of the site have been maintained / reinstated around the earth sheltered home office garden pod to protect the natural vegetation already existing and allow for some new additions with the exception of the reduced level dig area immediately in front of the earth sheltered home office garden pod to allow for natural drainage.
The visual impact on the site and neighbouring properties
We created a complementary contemporary design for the site which sets a precedent in the area for high design standards for garden room additions.
We have used a mixed palette of traditional and contemporary materials to give visual interest to the earth sheltered home office garden pod facades and used layering of materials to give depth and contrast to the front façade.
We have proposed the use of western red cedar timber cladding to complement the palette of colours found in the area. The western red cedar will be untreated and quickly fade to grey and blend harmoniously with the existing landscape.
We have used the natural level change in the site to minimise site impact and maximise the existing site features and maintain site levels where possible.
Type of Construction: Traditional construction / Timber frame
Eco Features: Over insulating the walls and ceiling, green roof, earth sheltered and sustainable drainage system.
As Existing: Unused garden space due to the change in levels.
